AT WHAT AGE IS ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT USUALLY STARTED?
It is good idea to visit the orthodontist when permanent teeth begin coming in, usually around the age of seven. Early evaluation and treatment may prevent some orthodontic problems. Although this age is an ideal time for an initial visit, actual treatment may not begin at this time. In many cases treatment may not begin until all of the permanent teeth are in.
CAN ADULTS BENEFIT FROM ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Adults can certainly benefit from treatment. As long as the teeth and gums are healthy, treatment is as successful as with younger patients. You are never too old for a beautiful smile, and many adults today are taking advantage of orthodontic treatment.
DO BRACES HURT?
Teeth are generally tender for a few days after the braces are placed on the teeth. After that, however, most patients do not seem to have any problems with pain or soreness. Some tenderness may be experienced after monthly adjustments, but for most people braces do not alter daily activity.
WHAT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY DURING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Generally, excellent orthodontic results can be achieved with informed and cooperative patients. Proper oral hygiene, wearing rubber bands or headgear, and keeping monthly appointments are all important for treatment to be successful. The most important factor in completing treatment on time is patient cooperation. The insufficient wearing of elastics, headgear, removable appliances, broken appliances and missed appointments lengthen treatment time, prevent obtaining desired results, and may result in additional fees and/or the discontinuation of treatment.
